What does SPF mean?
SPF stands for sun protection factor. This is the measurement of how long the sunscreen will protect you from the UV rays. SPF helps protect your skin from UVA&UVB, which also helps premature aging and sunspots.
Who should use sunscreen?
Anyone and everyone, no matter your skin tone or age.
What type of sunscreen should you use?
Sunscreen ingredients: Physical sunscreen ingredients vs. Chemical sunscreen ingredients
Physical sunscreens work best for clients who are prone to reactions or who have more sensitive skin. Physical sunscreens are active mineral ingredients. They work by sitting on top of the skin and reflecting the UV rays. Physical sunscreens are active immediately when applied. But physical sunscreens must be used more often as sweat and water can make it rub off sooner.
Chemical sunscreens can irritate the skin easier and aren’t typically recommended for sensitive skin. Chemical sunscreens take up to 20 minutes to activate after being put on to the skin. A positive to a chemical sunscreen is that less is needed, and it tends to spread more quickly compared to a physical sunscreen.
What level of SPF do I need?
SPF 30 blocks 97% of UV rays
SPF 30 blocks 97% of UV rays
(No SPF can block 100% of UV rays)
We believe 30 is a good option when choosing an SPF. While both 30 or 50 are great options, an SPF 50 can be more pricey. So going with a less expensive SPF 30, there is not a significant difference in the % of protection.
Waterproof/water resistant?
No SPF is waterproof (even if the bottle says so). SPF can be water-resistant, though. To avoid getting burnt, it is recommended to reapply every 2 hours, no matter what the label says.
Broad-spectrum protection: UVA, UVB
UVA rays are associated with skin aging, and UVB rays are associated with skin burning. Both rays can contribute to skin cancers. You want to make sure the SPF you are purchasing is “broad-spectrum” so that it protects you from both rays, not just one.
When should I apply sunscreen?
In the AM before going outside, also before planning on being out in the sun. You also want to make sure to reapply according to the time the SPF recommends. We recommend reapplying every 2 hours.
Where should I apply sunscreen?
Whatever areas of your body come into contact with sun exposure.
How much sunscreen should I use?
Enough to cover the area being exposed to the sun.
