Top 5 Mistakes You’re Making with Hair Extensions

NBR growth after 3 years of having them

1. Type of Hair Extensions You’re Using

What makes NBR beadwork so different?

Most methods are horizontally placed, meaning they line up with the part in the hair. As you can see in this picture, these beads are slanted to a 45-degree angle. Why does that matter? The beads are tilted for the purpose of putting your hair up making sure your row is hidden when you want to have a high pony or top knot bun. The beadwork also goes with the shape of the head, making it personalized for each and every client. The thread is intertwined with the beadwork allowing the wefts to be sewed onto the string instead of being sewed in the hair that is inside the bead, making it safer/less damaging for the hair. No tape or heat is necessary for installation.

2. Quality of Hair Extensions

We use ISLA hair for the NBR Extensions. Isla hair uses less silicone which creates a more natural and fuller look. With pre-treated and pre-toned color the extensions create a softer blend. With Isla hair, there are more grams per weft which creates a fuller look this will allow you to wear them longer because they won’t thin out as quickly. Isla hair also has the original cuticle intact on each strand, they all face the same direction. The cuticle is the outermost part of the hair shaft that is essential for strengthening. The hair is also ethically sourced from China and India.

3. Products You’re Using on Them

Not using the correct products can be damaging to your hair and the extensions. Extensions are made of 100 percent human hair so they need all the nutrients that your hair does. You don’t want to spend the money on good hair and go to the drug store to get something that will dry it out, strip the color, and create split ends. You need to use a leave-in conditioner, a heat protectant, an oil, and finishing products that are moisture-based. But be sure to stay clear of harsh proteins, sulfates, keratin, and alcohol. This will leave them dry, brittle, and prone to damage making them tangle-prone.

Products we recommend include:

Leave-in Conditioner: Ever.Smooth by Kevin Murphy

Heat Protectant: Heated.Defense by Kevin Murphy

Hair Oil: Young.Again by Kevin Murphy

All products listed above are available at De Luxe.

4. Scheduling Appointments

Not listening to the advice your hairstylist gives and scheduling your appointments on time is everything! If you don’t you are putting your natural hair at risk, everyone loses up to 100 strands a day and some can lose even more. Those hairs can be the section that’s a part of the hair in the bead, making them become less secure because of the amount of grip that is still attached.

Maintenance timeline: 6-8 weeks

5. Brushing Hair Correctly

Just like your hair, the extensions shed too, when it comes to brushing your hair you want to be careful starting at the bottom working your way up. You never want to start at the top because that causes breakage when you’re trying to take out a knot that would have been easily avoided if you would have started at the bottom. If you do get a knot spray some detangling spray to loosen it up making it easier to get out. Before washing always brush your hair making sure all the tangles are out making it easier to lather your shampoo and conditioner. When it comes to washing make sure you aren’t too rough in between the rows, you don’t want to scrub too hard or get your fingers caught in the grow-out stage between your scalp and the row, pulling on those beads can lead to damage to your natural hair.
